Functional Decor Surface

E-ink technology adds a whole new functional dimension to surface concepts developed by the automotive supplier Marquardt GmbH. Unlike emissive technologies, such as LEDs, e-ink is a reflective display technology. Therefore, it only requires power when changing states, not to maintain a color. This makes e-ink extremely energy-efficient and ideal for automotive interior applications.

Until now, Marquardt GmbH had developed surfaces with integrated backlighting. These approaches naturally require a continuous power supply. Integrating color-adaptive E-Ink films under a transparent plastic film with water-based INSQIN PU technology from Covestro creates surfaces that maintain a high-quality feel while enabling controlled, dynamic color modulation. This capability is ideal for software-defined vehicle architectures, where functional upgrades, enhancements, and interior color configurations can be updated throughout the vehicle's lifecycle.

This modular, radiation-based heating system redefines thermal comfort by combining design and adaptability.
